What is the pain you’re avoiding trying to tell you?

Yesterday, I talked about avoiding reality and what that might mean for the person you want to be and the changes you want to create in your life. Read it here

And some people have said, what are you talking about, I don’t avoid reality, reality is what I live with every day.

So, let’s see if I can put it a different way. When I talk about avoiding reality, what I’m also talking about is avoiding pain. And it sounds smart doesn’t it, a good thing to do to avoid pain. Whether its physical, emotional, metal or spiritual, who wants to feel any kind of pain?

Pretty much nobody.

And so most people avoid it, because they don’t understand it.

Pain in our lives, whether its showing up in our bodies, or our relationships, our work, our families, wherever you’re feeling pain, know this; pain is simply a messenger, a signal, a flare. All’s not well here, that’s what it means. Its a warning to you, something’s wrong and you need to give this your attention, you have to correct your course in some way, change the way you’re operating in that area of your life.

And sometimes it seems easy to spot the source of our pain, cause and effect, right? I put my hand on the hot stove and now I have a burn on said hand and I’m in a lot of pain.

Sure, that’s an immediate cause, but I’d be interested in knowing why I put my hand on that hot stove, what drove me to do that? Wouldn’t you want to know why too?

And this is where we add another level to our pattern hunting. Are there patterns to the pain you’re experiencing? You end up with the same relationship with different people who all seem to treat you in a way that’s harmful to you? The struggle with addictions, food, drugs, alcohol, pornography, always wanting to feel better so you turn to the things that ultimately make you feel worse.

Pain in the body can be easily explained away by having hurt yourself in a moment of carelessness, trying to carry something too heavy for you, twisting in a way that pulled a muscle, cutting yourself on a new sharp knife when chopping vegetables.

And of course, we can easily see what pain is telling us in that instant. Stop! Don’t move any further, stop doing whatever you’re doing before you make it worse.

And mostly, we’ll obey those pain signals and stop and take stock of the damage we may have caused ourselves.

But how often do we stop to listen to mental, emotional and spiritual pain? When our heart and soul is crying out for us to stop harming ourselves further. What do most of us do? We keep going, don’t we?

We stay in the job, the relationship, the circumstance whatever it is that’s making us unhappy. We continue to lie, gamble, cheat, use, and we deepen the self abuse.

And when our mental, emotional and spiritual pain keeps getting ignored it starts showing up in our body, where its not explained away by a recent injury.

Pain that lingers or shows up intermittently without any direct cause, what’s it message then? And will you now stop to listen to it?

Pain in our bodies and in our lives is waving a flag to attract our attention to something that needs healing, needs us to work on, to change whether its our thinking our habits our behaviour. It needs us to be aware and do something to alter the source.

When you feel pain, don’t simply try to numb it our of existence, instead meet it, go into it, sit with it, see it, feel it, give it substance and see what it has to show you.

I’m going to do a recording of a fantastic NLP process that’s great for releasing pain in the body and it will cover this process far better than my writing will, and you’ll be able to follow along and do it for yourself. I learned it from David Snyder and I’ve used it everywhere with people I’ve just met sometimes, to clear migraine headaches instantly, cold sore pain, frozen shoulder and all kinds of stomach aches. Its a powerful metaphysical technique and I’ll get it done as soon as I’m finished here.

Back to my point – pain is a message, it has something for you to see, hear, become aware of and do something about. Sometimes, the simple act of paying attention can cause the pain to fade away. Other times you need to take action of some kind, sometimes it needs a long term strategy to improve your health. Other times it is simply acknowledging feelings you’ve pushed down for too long.

See your pain, feel it, be aware of its message, where its coming from, what you and your body need from you. Because only be dealing with the source of the pain can you ever truly be free of it.

Love,

Cynthia xx
