No matter how you’re feeling, there are many ways you can make yourself feel almost instantly better.
Simple, effective and with relatively little effort.
Usually I write some long detailed post about how you can change your life by changing how you think but sometimes you just can’t face that. And some people aren’t ready to hear that.
So here are my top 3 Instant State Changers.
Yes, sounds too simple to be true. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
You just have to change how you’re sitting or even better, stand up.
Straighten up your spine, tilt back your head and lift your eyes up. Research has found that looking up actually dissolves low mood away.
The actual changing of your shape, from a hunkered down, curled up, trying to make yourself small/invisible position to a straight, tall, proud stature changes your psychological state.
We know that our physiology impacts our psychology and vice versa. Use this as a tool that benefits you, rather than being at its mercy.
When you raise your head, pull back your shoulders, lift your chin, you’re claiming your space.
You are inhabiting all the space you need to take up as you, here on the planet right now.
Hunching down suggests apology for being here. You have nothing to apologise for, you are meant to be here.
Stand tall. Be proud. Head up, eyes up. Feel better instantly.
Yes, just stop it! Whatever it is you’re doing that’s making you miserable. Overeating? Don’t put another bite into your mouth. Put down the drink, switch off the tv or games controller if you’ve been sucked into a marathon sesh.
Whatever it is, whatever you’re doing that’s poisoning you, making you feel f*cking awful. Just stop it.
For five minutes.
You can get through five minutes can’t you?
Or how about one minute. Stop for one minute. And then add another. and another. Make it to three, then five.
And once you get to five, can you build on that? Stop for 15 minutes? 30 minutes?
Just stop. Give yourself a break from the self destruct.
Not ready to stop just yet?
Then think about stopping. what would that be like to not force food down your throat til your stomach’s fit to burst?
What would it be like to not feel drunk and sick and out of control?
What would it feel like to wrestle just that little bit of power back from whatever it is you gave your personal power away to?
Just for 5 minutes.
Sit in the discomfort. Whatever is driving the cycle, just sit in it. 5 minutes. You can be uncomfortable, feel the feelings for 5 minutes.
Break the cycle. Stop the self feeding loop of cravings. Just stop.
And keep stopping. Stop for longer. Build your resilience muscle. Change your life.
Think of something else.
I’m not saying don’t think of whatever is making you miserable. Pink elephant, right? Telling you not to think of the thing will have you thinking of the thing.
Instead, I want you to think of something else. Something that makes you feel good or at least a bit better. A ray of sunshine through the gloom. A candle in the dark.
Have a list of things that make you feel good prepared. Keep it in your phone or a list in your pocket. I still like to write things out, so I always have lists on the go.
Don’t try to think of the positive thing in the moment, it won’t come.
Have your list prepared and read it, over and over. Like learning your times tables. Repetition is hypnotic, you learn and it sticks in your mind.
Keep saying it in your mind, out loud. Like a prayer. Exactly like a prayer. Your prayer. Praying to the things that make you feel good.
Allow yourself to feel the effects, whether its summer sun, a loved one’s smile, winning an award, getting first place at school, beating your best at the gym. Words have power – feel it!
This is your hymn to you, all about what makes you feel good.
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
When the dark thoughts threaten to break through. Repeat.
Up the urgency and speed of your repetition. Intensify the feelings the words give you.
Prepare your list of things that make you feel good. Use it like a superstition against the darkness. Like garlic warding off vampires.
There you go, three thing to change how you feel in an instant. Do all three together and you will build your resilience faster and bounce back higher.
Yes, as I said at the start. It’s simple. But it’s not easy.
You’ll resist. Of course you will. Feeling low becomes its own kind of addiction.
Look how miserable I am!
But you are an amazing, fantastic, unique human being. Sure I might not like you if I met you, although I probably would, I’m pretty tolerant of most things.
But if I met you, I can guarantee you, I’d root for you.
I’d be there by your side, saying yes, you can, you are capable, you are good enough, you have everything you need, you’ve got what it takes to be the best fucking expression of yourself.
Nobody else can do that except you. Be you.
And think of me there by your side, cheering you on, believing in your ability to stop and sit for 5 minutes. Believing in your right to claim your space and stand up straight. Believing you can create a light that carves a path through the darkness that engulfed you, leading you out.
Three simple things.
That’s all it takes and you’ll change how you feel, change how you think.
