Yesterday was a day of rest and recuperation for me and today I feel so much better for having taken that day out.
And it’s the same with many things in life, the seeds we plant today, may take days, weeks months and even years to come to fruition but nothing is ever for nothing.
Even doing nothing is not for nothing. A day of rest can repay you in many ways.
A day of doing nothing can invigorate the brain, being well rested inspires creativity and you have the energy to do more and get excited by what you’re doing.
Equally doing nothing day after day demands its future payback.
Everything we do has an impact on our future self, for good or bad.
It’s a useful prism through which to observe our daily activities. Will my future self thank me or berate me for this?
As I said yesterday, it’s not one big thing that changes our lives, it’s the small things we do consistently that add up and create the form and shape of how we live.
Do we eat the extra biscuit after dinner or go for a quick walk?
Do we finish up at work and tidy our desk, leaving everything ready to get stuck in on tomorrow’s priorities or do we just leave our desk like a bomb hit it and have to start tomorrow clearing it up and sorting through what was left undone before we get to the day’s meaningful work?
Do we choose to repeat the mindset changing, life changing RWID mantra we created or do we forget and just let the day happen without checking in about how we feel, creating the space to allow things to happen for us rather than to us?
Do we practice meditation, journaling, our daily practice of cleansing and clearing our minds or allow all the microaggressions and annoyances to build and fester within?
Looking after our mental and physical health is often compared to gardening. Till the soil, fertilise the ground, plant the seeds, nurture, pull out weeds, clear debris, allow for seasonal disruption and give it time to grow.
And that’s a great analogy, because as most gardeners will tell you, garden work is not done for today or tomorrow but for next summer and years to come and even for the next generations to enjoy.
In a year when we had one of the most glorious springs in recent memory, it had more hours of sunshine, by a very substantial margin, than any previous recorded spring; indeed, it was sunnier than any previously recorded British summer, except for three, nature and gardens were healing and gave solace to so many.
But coming into the darker months, we have to find equal if not more soothing comfort to get us through the Coronavirus winter.
Start planting seeds that will allow you to enjoy the darker days too.
Think about autumnal activities, get your waterproof coats and wellington boots out from the cupboard, clean and ready for use. Hats, gloves, scarves – all the fabulous options to keep you warm and stylish.
Join a book club, mine has gone virtual and we all meet up on Zoom to discuss our eclectic reading list. There will be loads to find online I’m sure.
Try something new. There are Zoom and YouTube classes for pretty much everything. I’m actually looking for a bible study class, something intellectually challenging to get my teeth into.
Plant seeds in your mind now… a list of old black and white movies for rainy afternoons.
A fleecy blanket rolled up and stored close at hand for pulling over your knee in the cooler evenings.
Make sure your home is secure for the coming weather conditions.
Establish yourself a habit of doing things your future self will thank you for.
Grumbling about dark nights, shorter days and colder conditions isn’t anything new. If you’re like me, you’ve been doing that for years.
This year, when its going to be more challenging than ever, prepare yourself with positivity and events to look forward to.
Plant your seeds. You will look back and be grateful you did.
Love,
Cynthia xx
